From Resilienceto AntifragilityBuilding urban mobility systems that grow stronger through disruption

to develop urban mobility systems that don’t just recover from disruption — they learn, adapt, improve, and grow stronger because of it.
As cities grow more complex, so do the risks they face. From everyday challenges like congestion and accidents to large-scale crises such as pandemics or energy shocks, conventional resilience strategies are no longer enough.
AntifragiCity helps cities become truly antifragile, capable of turning stress into strength.
Together, we are shaping the future of sustainable, equitable and adaptive urban environments across Europe.
Our mission
AntifragiCity aims to help cities move beyond resilience and embrace antifragility:the ability not just to withstand shocks, but to grow stronger because of them.
We are creating a new urban mobility governance model that enables cities to:
Detect and monitor
(near) real-time stressors and disruptions
Assess
their impacts through simulation and predictive tools
Evaluate
the public acceptability of proposed mobility triage scenarios
Make informed decisions
to mitigate those impacts and improve performance
Engage with citizens
through participatory methods and co-creation
Our approach
AntifragiCity combines technology, social science, and real-world testing to design antifragile urban mobility systems. Our work focuses on five core areas:
Continuous monitoring
Using KPIs and sensor data to detect stressors in real time
Disruption analysis
Characterising events using a structured event ontology
Rapid response
Supporting decisions with a mobility triage tool for short-term incidents
Long-term strategy
Using simulations and predictive analytics to design adaptive traffic systems
Citizen co-creation
Engaging the public through Living Labs to ensure inclusive and actionable solutions
Our demo sites
Our approach will be tested in four demonstration cities, each with different urban mobility contexts and challenges:
Findings from these pilots will be scaled to broader urban contexts across Europe.
Our team
AntifragiCity brings together 13 partners from 8 countries, including:

Research institutions and universitiesMunicipal governments and urban agenciesMobility technology providersPublic health organisationsInnovation and communication experts
Together, we combine academic excellence with practical implementation to build urban systems that are not only robust ― but capable of learning, adapting, and thriving.
